What a small world, I was trying to Google Chief Hatcher and a few others. I was on Pete Pearson's boat during the Hurricane. I knew Ron Young, John Hatcher, Jim Lovell, Georrge and all the folks you're talking about. I was on the Fuel Barges before the Tugs..was on Waxahachie and the Tuskegee. That night was a night to remember! We were lucky we pulled up to the pier and someone was kind enough to bring us some sandwiches. It was a long night and I know you guys had a real rough time trying to get that fellow who went overboard. Oops sorry I should have introduced myself...my name then was Lisa Smith. Was at Naval Station Service Craft for a couple years, then went to NAVCAMEASTPAC in Wahiawa, but worked at Camp Smith. Great to run across your accounting of the Hurricane!

Hi, Thanks so much for the reply!
I was Rons roommate for awhile and am trying to contact him .
I dated a girl names TJ on Ron tug and yes I did know the other chiefs.
I remmember the night of the hurricane and Ron blowing up his reduction gear on the tug as he held a ship ( I think the cimmeron off of the rocks)
Had a grat time Port services and then later on the USS Whipple FF 1062

Hi Ron,
Yes, I knew Ron Young. Actually, I got my tug names crossed in the story and was on the Tuskegee at the time of the Hurricane. Big mistake... but I was on the Waxahachie with Young at first and then moved over to Chief Hatcher's boat with Lovell and Kinder. Do any of those names ring a bell? Later, I ended up working in Military Personnel and typed a lot of ship movement messages for Port Services. I even remember a Lt. Baldasano and a civilian guy in the repair shack that was totally obsessed with Snap-On Tools. Good times... Maybe. :-) It's so cool to hear from someone that was in Port Services at the same time I was on the tugs. Happy Memorial Day, Shipmate. Have a great weekend.

Hi Wendy, I'm sorry it took so long for me to comment. Thanks for adding your story. Hawaii is such a beautiful place and I cherish my time there. I learned so many things while I was there about flowers, oceanography, and relaxation. The hurricane clean up took over a year. I lived at Ewa Beach in navy housing and I remember that a papaya tree in my backyard uprooted during the storm. The tree was loaded with ripe fruit and fell at our back door. Talk about a miracle since we didn't have any food and no stores were open. I'm glad you arrived safely and enjoyed your stay.
